Re: Parking Sonex Outside On Ramp Year Round

I had mine, polished finish, outside for 6 years with no ill effects. I had a canopy cover and wing covers, which both did an excellent job. Up here in the northeast, it was REALLY nice in the winter to just pull the wing covers off and never have to worry about snow, ice or frost on the wings. I d...

Re: Aerovee one EGT high

You need to get a good reading on the CHT. That's all the matters, really. If the CHT is in line with the others, and within the proper range, then there is likely nothing wrong with the cylinder, so it would be a sensor or display issue with the EGT.

Spending Summer Outside Milwaukee

I'm going to be spending 6 weeks in Wisconsin this summer, west of Milwaukee. June 20-August 4 or so, with my Sonex. So looking for some places to fly to for $100 hamburgers or just general fun places to fly to. And of course would love to connect with some fellow Sonex pilots. Suggestions are welco...

Re: When to polish?

I polished strictly due to weight. Mileage varies, but on a classic Sonex, 25 lbs seems to be the most common number reported when weighing the aircraft before and after. With an AeroVee, unless you're flying solo, weight is a very big consideration. Mine weighed in at 653 lbs at completion, and I o...

Re: When to polish?

I did the initial polishing when the sheets were flat. You do have to be very careful with the direction of the polishing pad. You want it to be moving away from edges and corners. If it's turning toward the edges, and especially corners (!!) you can instantly bend the corner with the pad if/when it...

Re: Building myths. Is scratch building really less expensi

I've been flying my scratch built for 10 years, now, so costs have increased. But I spent $28,000 all-in, including materials and tools. AeroVee 2.1, smoke system, MGL Xtreme Mini, transponder, MGL panel mount radio, uAvionix ADSB in/out, ELT, polished finish (Rustoleum rattle can paint on cowl and ...

Re: Noise insulation

I remember someone used angle pieces, just 1x1x.025 or maybe less, attached diagonally across panels with double sided tape. Effective, but no analysis of how these may concentrate stress at their ends. I saw this on another build and I am considering doing this to reduce the oil canning noise from...
