Dimpling in tight places

On my mini rudder, the skin rivets were lined up with the bottom rivets and it looked like I would have an interference when I went to pull the rivets. I decided to use flush AN rivets on the one row of the drive horn. 3 of those rivets went through a forward rib that would need to be dimpled, but t...

Re: Losing the training wheel.

It took me a little bit to convert to flying tricycle gear. When I was a kid my first landing in a C172 I managed to wheelbarrow it on. That was from 100 hours of mostly wheel landings. I did manage to put it on very straight, and very gentle, but it sure riled up the instructor. There were a few ot...

Re: Moving aluminum sheets

I have rolled a bunch of my 2024-T3 for storage. No harm done. Go for it.

Re: Tail tips tips

I did notice that the trailing edge of the tip sticks past the ruddervator. I think I will trim the edge that goes against the rib. Because of the sweep of the leading edge that will move the tip forward.

Re: Proud new owner of Sonex plans!

Congratulations samiam and welcome to the fold! If you are a Terminator, like in the movie then by all means download the coordinates and drill the holes now. If you are just regular flesh and blood then I would transfer from existing holes! I have often thought I could be a more efficient builder i...

Re: Tail tips tips

Here is a view of the Waiex tip in place. Easy to transfer holes when they are on top!

Re: Tail tips tips

Ryan of Waiex 197 and Kerry From Sonex both pointed out, nearly at the same time that the glass tip goes inside the skin but outboard of the rib. This is much like the mod that Michael mentions. Glad I asked and was made smarter!

Re: Roth Waiex #197

That should give Sonex a couple months to get the turbo available!

Re: Roth Waiex #197

Ryan,
Awesome blog and progress. Are you sure you are serial 197 and not 97? I would feel better about my own progress if that was a typo!

I see you are down in TN. My folks retired to Loudon 20 years ago.

Re: Losing the training wheel.

My personal opinion is beware of anybody with too much swagger, whether they fly a 152, Pitts, space shuttle, or whatever. I think is is also important to not get so confident that you get complacent, no matter how good you are or how much experience you have. As a new tailwheel pilot you are safe f...
