Yes, you can build a Sonex! (re-titled)

I re-titled the post from "Solid vs Pulled Rivets, plus a little more..." Hi, everyone! After scratch building my Sonex for 5 years, and flying it now for 8 years and 500+ hours, I've gotten permission (even prodding) from my wife to build an RV-7 (faster, roomier, more payload; all the th...

Re: Aeroconversion brake performance?

I've had the Aeroconversion brakes on my Sonex for years, and they work great. I usually run up to around 2400 or 2500 RPM with no issues.

Re: Buzzing Complaint

I have two primary areas I do aerobatics, and I try to alternate between them (different days) so I don't create the same noise in the same location every time. I also generally stay between 3,000' and 5,000'. Not only safer, but it keeps the noise further away from the ground.

Re: Wing stand/rack

That's the one I built. I still have it 12 years later. In fact, it's being used to hold a friend's Cessna wings right now!

Re: Rocker Stand Failure

The AeroVee and VWs are very good engines with a longer history of success than most any other engine in the world, and with good mainstream market parts. VWs can tolerate a lot of slop and still keep running. It's absolutely not fair to make unsubstantiated statements like "Makes you wonder ho...

Re: I have to tie it down

I had my Sonex tied down outside for 5 years (all surfaces polished; the 6061-T6 holds up great outdoors). Wing covers and of course a canopy cover 100% of the time. I never moved them or checked them, or moved the aircraft around based on weather conditions. I never had any blemishes or issues from...

Re: Cold weather operations. Preheat?

My solution: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ujF3cdGW5M I have the extension cord plugged into a "Kasa" Smart Plug so I can turn it on/off from my phone. I used this before I had a hangar, setting it up the night before flying. Doing this the night before ensures that not only is the oil ...

Re: Clicking sound when hand cranked

Thanks Scott and Bryan! You both sent us down the right track. Our aerovee was assembled before we purchased it. The previous owner had hired a VW mechanic to assemble the engine. Don't know if the VW guy or the previous owner installed the stator. Regardless, after we removed the stator assembly p...

Re: Clicking sound when hand cranked

If it's the same click I had, check out my Kitlog site. Start here, including the video link, and move to the next pages for the fix.

Re: Location of headset jacks/plugs

Wires are below the level of the structure so don't get smacked, and they don't hang off the panel in my lap.
