Re: Scott's Sonex #1629 - Progress

Awesome!!! I'm putting the first rivets in my left wing skins as I type this. I made a guesstimate a little while ago that when I finish my left wing I'll be about 50% done with the airframe, having already finished my empennage and aft fuselage. I'm at 434 hours. If you've finished both wings and ...

Re: ELT location?

My antenna is mounted in approx the same location. I made a tray with some sheet and a piece of angle. I mounted that behind former #2 that way it is still easily accessible but is hidden by my bulkhead divider and baggage sling. http://www.flickr.com/photos/98154384@N05/12699042463/ http://www.fli...

ELT location?

I have found a few logs/photos of various ELT installations in Sonexes, but am looking for some more ideas on locations, and the structures built to support them. I have the antenna installed about 42" behind the cockpit, on top of the fuselage. The 5' coax only reaches so far. I can certainly ...

Re: AeroConversions Throttle location

Whilst I’m waiting for the parts to fix my average wing rigging job I’ve started playing with the panel and instruments. I installed the throttle last night. I have an AeroConversion Throttle and I was trying to figure out where to install this in combination with the standard trim lever setup, peo...

OIL quick drain valve

I have the AeroVee aluminum sump plate installed. The large hole in the center has the oil temp sender. The other hole is for a 1/4" NPT fitting. Rather than just a drain plug, I was thinking of installing a quick-drain valve. Has anyone else done this? Are you happy with it? Where did you get ...

Re: Drain valve

Yes, but that apparently isn't the way the DAR sees it. His point is you want to check for these before every flight. Shame on me perhaps, but I agree with the thinking of the DAR. If it wasn't for the design of the Aerocarb with the burps that it is famous for, the thought of deleting the gascolat...

Re: Airworthiness Inspection - FAA Inspector/DAR Thoughts

I know some of you have successfully put off getting an ELT until the end of your Phase 1 flight testing. Here is an email conversation with my DAR that you may find interesting. From ME: I do not yet have an ELT, and I understand one is not required during Phase 1 testing since there will only be a...

Re: Drain valve

I think the concern isn't water, but dirt or other contaminants. I have found strange looking things in my gascolator on occasion. The assumption is that the fuel filter will stop the contaminates without itself being stopped up, so at least the fuel filter has to be checked, cleaned or replaced at...

Drain valve

For those that have an AeroVee with an AeroInjector, but no gas collator, do you have a drain valve? Right now I don't. The carburetor is the low point. The DAR is asking why I don't have one, and it seems like a good question since how would you check for water or contaminants with the carb and fue...

Re: Compression Test

Mike, Talk to Joe. I'm pretty sure he is just looking for a normal compression test not a leak down test if I remember correctly. The point of it is just to set a relative baseline for your particular engine so you can see how it is doing during each annual. It isn't in the checklist to meet a cert...
