Re: Sonex 1517 first flight

Awesome! So much fun to watch another homebuilt plane take flight! Again, congrats! Can't wait to see it at OSH next year!

Re: AeroVee RPM on first flight

I have 125 hours on my AeroVee and have never seen 3,200 rpm. Climbout generally never exceeds 2,900 rpm. I have the Sensenich ground adjustable prop and it's on its finest setting, so I can't get any more RPMs out of this particular prop. Some other AeroVees easily get 3,200-3,400 rpm. I can someti...

Re: runs hot

One cylinder didnt have any compression, the exhaust valve was too tight , removed the head to see if the valve was burned and it wasent I lap the valve and the seat but on installing the rocket hold down bolt snapped before it got to the 14 ' lbs, so i ordered it form sonex When you say the valve ...

Re: Compression Ratio Calcs

SonexN76ET wrote:Mike,

While you have your engine apart calculating your compression ratio, you may also want to lap your valves in an effort to improve performance.

I recently had new valves put in, and that was part of the process :-)

Re: Compression Ratio Calcs

Mike, I double checked your math and it seems correct, but I'm pretty sure you are aiming for the wrong compression ratio. Should be 8.0:1. Seems like your original settings were pretty close to correct. Why is your deck height so far outside Sonex's table now? Are you using different pistons? Yes ...

Compression Ratio Calcs

I'm rebuilding my AV 2.1. This time I decided to measured the actual CC's of the heads, and so have been calculating the barrel shims necessary to get the 8.5:1 ratio for av gas. When I built the engine the first time I had 2 shims on each barrel: a .045 and a .060 (that's what they measure with a m...

Re: Insurance

I needed 5 hours of dual, and another 15 hours in a tail dragger. Just over $1,600/year for $35K of hull + liability.

Re: Strike two :(

4 - torque it I would suggest you not torque the plugs. Just seat them firmly. I used the torque values at first and found them way too high for these heads AND for the plugs themselves. I actually snapped the head off a plug (so the threaded end was left in the engine head) before I got to the pro...

Re: Brake bleeder upside down?

I retrofitted the brakes onto my Sonex, and the bleeder is at the top. It's worked fine with no problems.
