Drilling control surface skin overlaps

Initially found this a bit challenging as there is nothing backing up the skin. Got some quality duct tape (gorilla brand), formed it into a T shape, and stuck it on the skin. This way you can pull on the tape with pliers. It actually works better pulling away from the edge of the tape, which is not...

Re: New Onex#133 Builder

Tom,
You are outpacing us. We have about 75 man-hours so far. It goes quick though doesn't it. I do not regret my choice to spend the extra money on the machined parts or spars.

Re: Scratch building a Sonex...what's involved?

Chris, I built an RV4 tail then switched to a scratch build hummelbird. The skills are not hard. Aircraft factories are filled with people that started off the street with no experience. You need to read up on sheetmetal construction and workmanship standards. You need to practice on scrap or someth...

Re: Cotton Waiex 191 - N191YX

Late night at the hangar again. I am drilling skins. The wood is a quick little surrogate rib I made to support the skin while drilling. Helps a lot. One thing I figured out is you don't really have to measure out the holes for the angled part on the root - just lay a straight edge across the other ...

Re: Start the Clock

David,
Excellent! You will have to post some progress pictures sometime. There is a guy in my neighborhood with a Onex tail kit and I keep trying to get him to start. I think he is waiting to retire from the airlines.

Re: Aligning and holding hinges for drilling to control skin

Here is a mix of techniques from here and Sonextalk. I used a couple fuselage parts (SNX-F24-12/13) to simulate the aft spar and skin of the stabilizer. They are .030, the aft spar and skin are .032 and .025 so I used a stripe of blue tape on the skin to make up the difference. I pinned the two hing...

Re: Cotton Waiex 191 - N191YX

Ruddervator skins trimmed with a cutoff wheel on my grinder. Then the belt sander, files and scotch brite. Drive horns bent and clecoed to the root ribs.

Re: Aligning and holding hinges for drilling to control skin

Thanks SvingenB. I understand how you did it. I had thought to drill the hinges first and then the ribs, but I see you did it the other way. I think your way guarantees good fit of the ribs.
