Waiex #0056 has a new home

Postby MichaelFarley56 » Sun Sep 25, 2011 10:42 pm

Today was a busy day and a big day for the airplane project. It started at around 9:00 a.m. with the rental of a 26' U-Haul truck to move the project to the local county airport. Just my luck though, I think I got the oldest truck in the U-Haul inventory which made things interesting later on.

Anyway, long story short, the airplane is now at the hangar and the wings are now on the plane, just maybe to stay for a while.

I also couldn't help but toss the canopy on and see how it looked that way:

Unfortunately, not all went quite according to plan. I did get a nice size dent in the right wing leading edge as a result of the tailwheel hitting the wing during the drive, so now I'm 100% sure the plane will be getting painted. I can easily fill the dent with body filler and no one is the wiser, but I was still pretty ticked when I saw it.

Also, the beast of the U-Haul ended up leaving the hangar in noble fashion:

Apparenly there was a big electrical problem and no one could get the thing started, so after staring at the truck in front of my hangar for around 3 hours they finally towed it away. I'll be interested to see what my bill ends up being...

Thanks guys! Oh, one last thing for any Waiex builder that would like to use a U-Haul to move their project...do yourself a favor and don't rivet the stabilator end caps until AFTER the move. I found out the hard way that if the fiberglass tips are on, the fuselage is too wide to fit :?

Looking good! From that point, I was 60 days from flying... 8-)

Hehe. I know what you mean about the U-Haul...

Great idea Kip! I wish I would have thought of that. I'm not sure about 60 days to flight...I'd be happy with double that!

I couldn't help but toss the wheel pants on today just to see how the plane looks...

I do need to fit the gear leg fairings so I'll use that as my excuse! Hopefully the panel will be wired here in just a few days so I can start finishing the wiring in the plane.

Kipp, did you do your own painting? Looks like it was already painted when you took her to the airport?
BTW, saw your plane at OSH and its friggin beautiful. Sorry I didn't get to meet you.

I had a friend do it. I did everything on the plane twice while building...I did not want paint done twice...
