Josh,

Good job flying the airplane first and foremost.

Sorry to hear of your temperature issues. With it being a new engine, cylinders at or a little over 400 degrees isn't a big shock but I wouldn't want to go much over that and for long. Now that mine are broken in, I don't see them get over 370-380 even on a long climb.

With regards to the carb, do you have any data on what temps your EGTs were at full throttle (38-40") on climb out? Also, did it help if you throttled back to 35-37"? The AeroVee will get hot if you run prolonged power settings of 38-40" manifold pressure for long; I believe that's a big reason why we only run above 35" for a few minutes.

Otherwise my recommendations are what others have said. Make sure your cowling has proper air entrance and exit cooling openings, make sure your rubber seals on your baffles seal against the cowling well, and make sure all your wheel and gear leg fairings are installed.

What was your oil temps doing?

Keep us updated on what you find!

Mike,
I didn't get a good read on my EGTs, but they were well in the green when I glanced down. The only caution/warning light I received was the CHT. I leveled off and pulled the throttle to 37" and maintained an airspeed >105mph but they still climbed above 425.

I think Robbie is onto to something regarding my timing of the secondary. I am going to go back to the Aerovee manuals Saturday morning and start from the beginning on timing, mixture and tuning. I know the valves are adjusted right at .008 and .014. The engine is spinning smooth. The oil is clean.

Here is my to do:
- Expand cowl exit by 1"
- Check to ensure both primaries magnets are functioning (first set were bad)
- Confirm all baffle seals are tight
- Set secondary timing
- Move from 2.0 to 2.5 needle and confirm it fits properly
- Re-tune aerocarb

And try again. :) It's a perfect weekend for flying in Chicago. I am hoping to get these temps balanced so I can log some nice break-in time.

Something to think about. The initial high cht's on my non-turbo Aerovee where greatly improved by retarding the secondary ignition a few degrees. I think the test was to fly/cruise on each ignition individually and see if you get a cht rise.

Anyone in the area tonight or tomorrow that is good at tuning these engine, I'd buy lunch. I figure the extra eyes may find something I've missed. :) let me know. Thanks. Josh.

Great news!

Moved to the #2.5 needle. Retimed the secondary. Re-tuned the carb. Runs little a kitten and purrs.
Logged 1.1 hours between 32-36 MAP and it just flew incredible.

Great news Josh!

What did that do to the temps? How were the EGTs looking?

Good to hear!

CHTs dropped to 405. EGTs to 1100. Ran perfect.

I almost have the tank setup sheet complete. It'll be up tomorrow morning.
