Expanding gas cap

Postby kmacht » Sun Jun 04, 2017 9:58 pm

The rubber on my gas cap has failed again after a year. I have the old style with the expanding plug. I remember seeing a post on here at one point of a gas cap that was machined and used o-rings. I thought that either someone was making and selling them or some company was. If someone know a the cap I'm talking about could you please point me in its direction. I tried the search function on the forum but it didn't show the post I remember.

Peter Anson in Australia makes the fuel caps I believe you're referring to. I purchased one of the nylon versions, and it looks and fits very nicely. My plane is not flying yet, but it appears that fuel cap should be very durable for years to come. His site is: ansoneng.com

Peter Anson makes and sells the fuel caps with the o rings as a replacement for the old rubber milk jug fuel caps. I have one and I love it.

I got my new fuel cap from Peter Anson and works great. I was sure tired of buying a replacement every year. Great design. Thanks Peter!

I agree. I bought the all aluminum version of the gas cap from Peter a while back. It's beautifully made and works well as advertised. Who would think that something as simple as using a "gas cap" could bring so much pleasure to a Sonex flyer.........but after struggling with the old thermos bottle cap for years, it does. Great job, Peter.

I have one as well as his adjustable flap stops and jack. Contact Peter, he's a fine bloke who makes some other improved items for Sonexs as well.

What is the diameter of the "O"ring cross-section. The largest I can find is 3/16" in this size of "O"rings.
The reason I'm asking - in the photos it appears that they are larger than 3/16".
I wondering about the day when the "O"ring may need to be replaced.
Thanks for your response.

The caps I sell are based on a design by Roger Connolly. The O ring is a standard industrial part. The US part number is AS568-324 and size is 1.75 OD, 1.375 ID, 3/16" section. I buy them from a retail bearing supplier. I have had this design cap fitted to my own Sonex for about 18 months and have not had an O ring fail so I can't tell you how long they last, but the last batch I bought cost me A$2 each so they are not an expensive replacement.
