Sonex Kit & Info

Postby dominicelliott » Thu Mar 21, 2024 12:58 am

Does anyone have or know of a Sonex kit for sale ?

Does anyone know of a Completed Sonex owner (preferably around JHB) or , second prize, a sonex builder that I could chat to / look at the real thing ?

Any info appreciated

Could be. Didn't see anything in ForeFlight for JHB or KJHB

I was at Jeff Shultz' build site and he mentions you see a lot of "barely used plans" for sale, because I guess a lot of people order plans, see how complicated it is and get scared.

Where is a good place to look for used Sonex A plans for sale?

I suspect that is a less common thing now. Most plans are probably sold with kits these days.

If plans are still $600, and the transfer fee is $200, that makes $400 the break even point. Are you going to scratch build?

The current plans price is $750. I made a transfer last summer and the fee was $100.
If you get an incomplete set of plans, Sonex will sell you a re-print for $200. Probably after the transfer is complete.

I won't separate them, but I have a fresh set of Legacy plans (only unrolled once) that comes with a largely intact fuselage kit that has the machined angle components that I'll sell.

I guess I envisioned spending $300 for used plans, only as research money well spent.

It would be nice if you ordered plans, then later ordered the kit, if they gave you a $600 credit towards the kit (although I know plans are only for Sonex-A and kit is only for Sonex-B)

So the transfer fee thing doesn't apply to me.

My plan is to order the plans for $600 (I guess $750 now) but will def like to by used plans if possible, and not bother with the transfer

I think it might be difficult to avoid the transfer fee. The plans have the aircraft serial number.

Plans exist to eliminate confusion, not create it.

My plan is to buy plans. Then if I want to proceed, to buy a kit. (which comes with its own plans) Meaning I just wasted $600 (or $750), which is not a big deal

So if I could buy used plans for $200, this would be great. There is no transfer fee issue for me
