Sonex Group Arrival at Airventure 2016?

Postby mike.smith » Sat Jan 30, 2016 1:19 am

Is anyone interested in doing a Sonex group arrival to Airventure this year? Perhaps leaving from RYV Watertown, WI on the Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning before the show?

I like your thinking Mike. Sounds like fun! I have never stop at KRYV, but from the comments I read on Foreflight it sound like a great stopping place with a restaurants across the street if you get in early and need lunch. I like to fly into Oshkosh on Saturday if weather permits so I am there on Sunday morning for the Sonex open house.

I am interested. We could also base it out of Rochelle in northern IL where some of us are going to gather for an informal Sonex event.

I love Watertown but it gets pretty busy.

RYV was just a suggestion, but I stopped there last year and there's lots of room and 4 runway headings to choose from, which is a good thing if things are windy. When the summer gets closer lets run this up the flag pole again, but it sounds like there is some interest, so you can put in on your calendars :-)

I would love to do this... assuming my aircraft is finished by then....

But waiting till summer is not an option, you need an FAA LOA, which includes a reservation time to arrive as OSH and a special waiver of normal procedures from the FAA. each pilot needs specific training in accordance with the LOA...

See http://www.cessnas2oshkosh.com/training.aspx a bunch of good info especially on the bottom of the page.

Now if you talking leaving together in a loose trail and entering the FISK arrival procedure together, that's different, but depending on the number of planes, it might be kind of tough and not sure about the safety of pulling a long line of aircraft into the arrival without creating more then normal conflicts with the normal traffic...

I was not thinking of a formal group arrival. Honestly there aren't that many Sonexes that show up at OSH each year, and not all would be able to meet up on Saturday and fly in. I'm thinking of this as just a group of interested pilots who happen to take off single file and get into the conga line (loose trail) with everyone else. I'm guessing there might be 10 of us. After the first couple of Sonexes on the arrival it would even be nice to hear the controllers start to get the aircraft right. Last year I was constantly being called an "RV." :-) As you note, to do a more formal group arrival takes more skill and practice than we all have time for, like here at the "Cherokees to OSH" group: http://www.cherokees2osh.com/procedures.asp

Both trips to OSH in my plane we did as a flight of two. The Fiske guys called us RVs. At least this past year, we got the "Sonex turn base at numbers, green dot, second sonex, follow first sonex, base at numbers pink dot. Warbird on final 27 behind you.
