Sonex Accident Database

Postby chris » Sat Mar 03, 2018 2:54 pm

A database of Sonex related accidents has been created at SonexBuilders.net. It is a compilation of information found on the NTSB website. The NTSB information for each accident is directly linked to the accident aircraft registration number in the database.

The intent of compiling this data is to learn from historical accident events and to find trends that need to be addressed.

It is available at: http://www.sonexbuilders.net/accidentdatabase.

This database can and will become outdated without participation from the Sonex community. This thread will be a "Sticky" and will provide a means for those interested to provide additional or missing information about accidents in the database.

Chris: I don't know why I couldn't find this database and,as far as I know, no one ever pointed it out to me till now. I don't understand, however, on the totals, Why pilot error isn't mentioned as cause. It lists stall/spin 30.4%), loss of power (71.7%) and fuel exhaustion (8.7%). If you add all those percentages up they exceed 100% and that doesn't even include pilot error. I'm probably reading something wrong but, help me out.

You didn't see it before because I just put it together yesterday.

The numbers shouldn't add up to 100. Some loss of power also would be included in stall spin scenario so 1 accident could fit into multiple categories.

I didn't include pilot error yet in the table but I will get to it.

Stall spin is almost always pilot error.

True but there are other pilot error accidents that don't involve them so I will still include pilot error in the spreadsheet.

We all know it is important to just fly the plane. It's nothing new or exciting but I thought it would be a good visual to include that category to reinforce just how closely the spin percentages match the fatal percentages.

Thanks Chris. I think you are doing a great service to prospective builders of Sonex aircraft. When do you think you will have Pilot error as a category?

It's Updated. I included a total pilot error and a pilot error without loss of power being a factor.

Chris: Thanks. I don't understand what the percentages pertain to however.

(Number of accidents in category)/(Total accidents)

Multiple categories can apply to a single accident.
