CFI with Sonex B experience

Postby DuncanK » Mon Dec 14, 2020 4:56 pm

My Sonex B is nearly complete and an insurance company requires that I am checked out by a CFI with 15 hours in Make and Model. I am questioning the requirement and looking for a different insurance company, but are there any CFIs with 15 hours in a Sonex B model? I'm based at Prescott AZ?

Hi Duncan

I doubt the insurance company will care Sonex A vs Sonex B, but the point remains valid. This has been one of the biggest challenges our community faces. It’s been often discussed here.

Tricycle gear or taildragger?

There is a CFI with Sonex experience. (I though her name was Sarah...? Someone correct me)

You may also see if they will accept time and training in a similar make and model, though this has been problematic for others.

Hopefully someone can out you in touch with a CFI who can assist you.

I'm a CFI with 10 hours in non-B models. I don't currently have access to one though. What is your plan for first flight? Are you familiar with the Additional Pilot program?

I'm in Chandler, AZ

What is the additional pilot program? Is it where someone with experience in the experimental aircraft you are flying is allowed to accompany you in phase one? I remember reading something about that, but never new if it became part a formal rule. I am building a Sonex, but also want to buy one to replace my very old Citabria while I finish my sonex. I am shopping for a flying Sonex and am looking for transition training, as soon as I acquire it. Colette Miller, mipmiller@gmail.com.

someone mentioned a CFI in Washington state. Does anyone know how to contact this person? That would be closer to me.

Proper training is so important. Are any of you CFI’s?… or know of any in the greater Detroit/Oakland/Troy vicinity? Would like to discuss logging some hours.
