ONEX panel alternative

Postby Onex11 » Sun Apr 29, 2012 3:47 pm

I know this is rather unsusual but it fits my requirements for now (leisure flights). These is a discussion on Yahoo about alternative and lack of room. Here is my approach:

1-Used the MGL Extreme in the center
2-Added 3.5 in. to the panel height itself
3-Installed RAM holders for my IPAD and IPhone and ICOM portable radio.

It is crowded but I can read them all pretty good. Ther is no transponder but I don't need one. The only drawback is that if the Extreme fails there is no back-up for indicated airspeed and RPM. Both the IPAD and IPhone can run Foreflight and Air Navigation Pro and other aviation software. I can use the IPAD as a camera (eager to try it in flight). The other advantage is everything is portable. :D

Looks great. My only concern would be the rather large blind spot created with the I-pad,or it appears so?

Hi Mike,

May be at take-off but in flight attitude it is not that bad because I am a 6 footer and I sit high in the cockpit. Obviously, I have not tried it yet so... I might have to remove it or readjust to a lower position while taking-off.

Will see...

I like it. Mike may be right..the iPad may block a little view but that's up to you. I've been having great luck with my iPad on my leg and I know there are "kneeboard" iPad holders...I'll probably pick one up.

Quick question...why did you raise your panel? Are you thinking about adding stuff later? Easier to see the MGL? It looks great I'm just curious.

What do you have left to do before you fly? Looks like you're getting really close!!

Curious how you are powering the icom handheld. Are you just using the battery or do you have it tied into the planes battery? The reason I ask is because I am also using an Icom A6 in my sonex and when I plug it into the planes power it will receive but not transmit. From what I am reading if it senses anything over 11.6 volts coming into the power port on the radio it won't transmit. With the alternator running I am well above that.

Mike,

The panel was added 3.5 in at the bottom to give more room for the breakers and switches. Otherwise it was hard to fit both and the Extreme height wise without interference. I am working on the wings which were relayed to the end of the construction process but I am almost done (1 week away).

Keith,

I just used the standard Icom 12VDC power supply which correctly limits the suply to a lower continuous voltage. Its mounted in the back of the panel. I have not done a radio check yet (transmission).
