Mounting my Ipad mini

Postby Sonexcanada » Sat Jun 15, 2019 9:06 pm

Just redoing my panel and was wondering if anyone knows a good mount that i can use to attach to a corner of the panel and mount a ipad mini?

My preference is the RAM ball and socket system with a device-specific iPad mini 4 mount (http://www.rammount.com/consumer/device-mounts). Although not flying as of yet, my instrument panel has several 1/4-20 nutplates for the attachment of a RAM ball with an attached 1/4-20 stud. I like the flexibility of the RAM system. In addition to semi-permanent ball mounts there are several system clamp mounts that are adaptable for other aircraft configurations. I frequently use a clamp and arm for attachment to a C172 yoke.

I have no experience with permanent panel mounts for iPad.

I second the Ram mount system, they are well built and solid. With a ball base, arm and Ipad mount you can mount an ipad pretty much anywhere you want in the cockpit. I put mine on the glareshield.

Wherever you have room to mount the base (which is fairly small) you can then position the ipad wherever you want it to be.

As you can see in the pictures mine is in the middle but I'm tall and don't have an issue seeing past it. You could mount it on the glare-shield closer to the front edge and have it hang past and in front of the instrument panel. I did add a .032 2"x2" backing plate (held in place by the mounting bolts) under the glare-shield to stiffen it up a bit.

Off topic, but I do find it a bit funny that it's called a glare-shield and does nothing as-designed to shield glare of any sort.

Ryan,

Like your panel a lot, love the simplicity, including the vent balls in the panel. Can you send me some more pictures of you panel and cockpit to gvrsmurray@gmail.com. Much appreciated.

Thanx Bro

My favorite mount is by MYGOFLIGHT (.com). I used to use RAM but found the rubber ball had more give than I liked. Their holder/case stays on the ipad all the time. It can also be used with leg straps but I've not done that. Excuse the mess.

This is the mount for removable installations. Though the arm could be mounted direct.

The articulating arm is very solid.

There are those of us who have had the dreaded iPad overheat warning - and those who have not had it.......yet.

Mine sits on my lap or on the passenger seat. So I can be sure to get it in shadow and keep it cool.

That's a good point Graeme.
In my Sportsman (same mount, same location) I have a vent right behind the iPad on the left side. I know many Sonex's have panel vents as well. Makes a great cooler for the iPad mounted as I have it.

Or you could just go with a Samsung android tablet running IFLY GPS and not have to contend with overheating issues. Try it, you'll like it.
