ADSB Options in 2017

Postby mike.smith » Thu Oct 19, 2017 8:10 pm

I had been hoping the NaxWorx would make a comeback. But they are out of business. It's been a year since I've seriously looked at experimental ADSB in/out solutions. It looks like some new options are available, like uAvionics' echoUAT. Then there are some others that are still around like Sandia, Skyguard, Skyvision, Trig and Freeflight systems.

My moving map GPS is Avare running on an Android tablet, and my current ADSB-in is received wirelessly on that. Any new solution would have to do the same. I know the solutions by uAvionics and Skyguard will work.

What are some of you currently using or have looked at?

Mike,
I’ve been using the echo and Skyfx from Uavionix. So far so good with that system. Use a I pad mini too

On the web site I don't see much in the way of screen images. Do the aircraft targets display relative altitudes? The "arrows" I see as targets seem fairly large. Do the obscure the moving map below? How well does the weather get depicted (like, is it very pixelated)?

Thanks,

Hi Mike.

For ADSB "in", I'm using a Stratus 2S receiver working with ForeFlight on my iPad mini.

For ADSB "out", I am installing a Stratus ESG transponder.

While I have the plane down next month for the transponder installation, I will also be installing the Dynon autopilot system.

Fun with wires!

It works really well with Forflight and the Iflygps ap for iPad. It’s a lot to look at but you get used to it after a while

My plane is not flying yet but I installed an EchoUAT and it seems to work nice.
Taildragger Waiex in progress, tail done, wings done, about to mate wings to fuse,
then cowl, canopy, paint (photos): flush rivets, turbo aerovee, acro ailerons
(I built my RV7A and happily flew it for about 500 hrs)

I have a SkyGuardTWX, it’s buggy. I’ve helped install two echos and they just work. I’d go echo if I did it again. And if my SkyGuardTWX goes Tango uniform, I will.

I just put in my order for the echoUAT with SkyFYX-EXT (WAAS GPS). They even gave me $100 off when I called (I think they took pity on my NavWorx story). I should have it next week. Hardware that gets shipped as promised... what a concept!

I have no faith my SkyGuardTWX will last till 2020 or be compliant at that time. im going to wait until late 2019 before going with any other solution.

Hi mike smith,
Sounds like the way to go. I hope your credit card co. Can give u some relief on your navworx purchase. Will be interesting to see what dallas avionics will offer in a couple weeks. I think that navworx is completely done. To many other options out there. The circus has gone on much too long . No rescueing the brand. I hope he never shows up at oshkosh again. People will be hard to control themselves. Jim bede, jan eggenfelner, bill moffitt, , etc. buyer beware.
