Removing wheel from main gear titanium strut

Postby pschwenn » Wed Jul 17, 2019 2:07 pm

I need to replace the entire wheel assembly on one of the forward main gear struts of a taildragger. I removed the bolt that holds it on, but even with a small sledge hammer and flat nosed chisel I can't move it at all. Is it possible that heating all but the titanium strut itself would release it?

Thank you, Peter Schwenn

Did you build the plane ? If not, sounds like someone may have used epoxy as the axle sockets are normally a rather loose fit on the gear legs and require some thin shims. If epoxied, some heat of up to about 350 deg. F might loosen it enough.
