4/6/2014 - A Nice Evening Flight

Postby MichaelFarley56 » Sun Apr 06, 2014 9:57 pm

Hello Everyone,

Tonight was one of those rare, beautiful evenings here in central Ohio where the air was cool and calm so I had to skip a lot of chores and take the Waiex up for an evening flight. I recently installed an oil booster kit so I also was curious to see how my oil pressure was doing (I'm now getting 60-70 psi in cruise with an oil temp of 160 degrees)

I had nowhere I needed to fly, so I set my power at a nice low cruise power, leaned it back, and just enjoyed the evening air. Here's the main Honda plant located just outside Marysville, OH:

Here's the Honda R&D center where Sonex builder Scott Meyer works:

After I flew around for 30 or so minutes, it was time to shoot a few touch and go's before stopping for the night. I hadn't fueled up in a while so it was time to add some gas. Have I mentioned how nice it is to put 1.5 hours worth of fuel in a Sonex?

I can think of worse ways to spend around $40!

For everyone out there who continues to file metal, drill and deburr holes, and pop rivets, keep at it! Trust me, you are going to LOVE your airplane once it's flying! They are simply a blast to fly! Fun, responsive, yet easy to fly. And the visibility is second to none!

Thanks everyone!

Thanks for the inspiration. My carpal tunnel surgery has slowed progress...can't wait to get back to it.

Thanks for the post and the nice pictures of the auto plant and "my" R&D campus!

I was too busy doing the flying yesterday in the 172 trying to "pass" my Flight Review to actually enjoy the flight and scenery...we'll I enjoyed flying but it was my first time up since last July in the 172...thankful I got some stick time in Steve's Waiex last month!

Seeing both you and Steve at KMRT yesterday was encouraging. Especially with how fast he got his nose gear repaired and he was back in the saddle again!

We all need to meet up for a flight somewhere, two Waiex's and a Sonex in loose formation would be cool (you, Steve and Mark)!

Who knows maybe I will be done with Phase 1 testing by next month...(LOL that's Mark's inside joke with my build progress).

Glad you had a nice night. We enjoyed seeing you guys at the airport, sorry we had to run off, but my son and I also enjoyed getting down to Columbus and seeing the Blue Jackets put three power play goals in the net last night against the Islanders.

Later,
Scott

Must be nice to get back up after the bad winter! Thanks for the view of the plant where my Honda was born. I'd never seen it.

On the way to SnF a few days ago, I heard from 50 miles out that they were holding arrivals over Lake Parker so I throttled back to what seemed like 50% power and nudged along at 100 mph taking in the scenery. It was nice change with the quieter ride and smooth air. Gotta smell the roses every now and then and all that... :)

Scott, glad to hear the flight review went well for you! Good for another 2 years! And yeah I'd love to get a flight together with the "locals", assuming Steve can throttle back far enough for me to keep up! Mark and I had fun flying down to Crossville together last year.

Kip, glad you made it home. We all want to see pictures of SnF and the Sonex gathering when you get a chance!
