Forward Wing Rib Notch

Postby vernd » Thu Aug 28, 2014 10:09 pm

I've seen where some builders have cut "notches" in the forward wing ribs at the front of the rib top and bottom. Not sure if I'm describing this properly - but the intent of the notches was to provide some flexibility on the flange of the ribs to avoid a visible ridge on the leading edge wing skin.
However - now I seem unable to find any info on builder web sites. So a couple of questions -
1) Has anyone else done this minor modification
2) If so - was it worth the effort
3) Any idea where I can find a photo of this with some guidance.

Thanks very much

Vern,
They showed us this trick at the builder's workshop. Here is a picture of my wing LE project from the workshop:

As a temporarily reformed scratch builder I thought it was a neat idea and I would do it. The drill bit in the picture is 1/8" which is about the width of the notch. It is about 1/4" long. They had a tool that put the notch in with just one bite. Maybe Joe can tell us the tool name since he is up there.

Thanks Bryan - that's exactly the info that I was looking for.
