Reinstall gear fairings

Postby Art Tiller » Thu May 09, 2024 8:47 pm

I removed my gear fairings (standard gear). Now I want to reinstall them. My hinge pins install from the middle. For me holding the fairings in alignment while I slide the pins in is difficult. Do any of you use clamps of some kind? Can you make a recommendation.
Thanks

I'll have to make a video sometime. It's pretty easy. I recommend laying on the ground under the gear leg. The goal is to get the pin through the first two loops then you are home free. I put the top pin in first. Just squeeze them together and you may need to "roll" the taco shell a little to get the first 2 loops to line up. By roll, I mean use your thumb to push the side it's clamping forward or aft, while your other fingers on the other side push aft or forward. Once you get the hang no tool is needed and it will take less than a minute.

Edit: looking at the video I just made, I do the rolling by moving the trailing edge up and down. It's easy.

I've done it just wrapping some masking tape around it a few times to hold it in place.

I liked how the screwdriver was reflected in the bottom of the wing. Thanks for this. I will give it a shot this afternoon.

Turns out the hinges are the least of my problems when reinstalling the gear leg fairings. I got a sheet metal clamp from Harbor Freight. That is a help. I got the bolt and nut started on the Adel Clamp. But then I looked down and noticed that the lower end of the fairing was binding on the brake arm. If I close up the fairings and put in the pins. The fairings will impinge on the brake cable and arm. Am I supposed to reposition the arm so as to close up the fairing. I am flummoxed, bewildered, baffled, and mystified.

The right one is on. I am thinking of trimming the fairing around the brake arm. Does this look right to you all?
Do you see the bug on the tire? Close to nature here at Roosterville.
Sorry about the upside down pic. I can't seem to fix it.

Art,
I always have my wheel pants on. Maybe that would keep your fairing off the brakes? Is the fairing tight against the bottom of the airplane? My top pin sticks through the floor and the bottom pin through the wheel pant.

Both fairings are on the legs. The brake arms are working without interference from the fairings. I have tested the brakes on and off. Seems to be working ok. My condition inspection is coming up next month and I plan to trim the fairings to make more clearance from the brake arms. I am happy to be rid of the wheel pants. Thanks for the help.
