Well, I have a working plane again. Cleaned out tank and filters, had carb stripped and checked twice by different - good -mechanics, tried a larger main jet (280, I am running 255) had distributor caps, rotor arms and coils outputs checked, all to no avail. Would not hold full revs cleanly (and with the 280 not at all, just bogged down so too rich). Fortunately have a spare carb and had the main(255) and needle jets and needle from old carb put in. Now runs perfectly - normal take off together with full throttle runs when airborne. Years ago an engineer who looked after a fleet of motor gliders told me one of them kept stopping and he only sorted it by giving the carb a sonic bath. Might give my old carb that treatment, but it can than stay in its box as I believe in quitting while ahead ! Been three months of pain, but thanks again for your comments and suggestions.
