Flywheel bolts dumb question

Postby andrewp » Sun Oct 15, 2017 3:29 pm

So i pulled the engine, got all the bolts out and now i feel completely stupid. There is nothing apparently holding it on but the spider is firm wedded to the back of the engine sans 4 bolts.

Obviously i am missing something (obvious) but i am in no rush and dont want to hurt anything except my own feelings.

Experienced folk... any tricks here?

Hi Andrew. If you mean what I think you mean? There are hidden alignment roll pins between the spider and spacer, and spacer and engine that will be holding it all together. Carefully tap and or prise it apart.

Ok, that is what I thought looking at the exploded diagram of it but I was expecting the roll pins to hold it in place, but jam it on. It is not easy to find an angle to tap the thing, but my attempts to do didn't move it a single millimeter. Ok, if it is the roll pins then next time I am out visiting said plane, I will give it a harder whack.

Andrew. My experience was exactly the same as yours, thinking it would just pull off. Nah. After quite a while of pussy footing around it was a great relief when it finally started to separate.

Hi Andrew,

In addition to the roll pins, the spider wants to stay in place due to the magnets of the alternator. In fact, it's a challenge to align the pins when putting it back together. Watch that you don't pinch your fingers between the spider and engine.

Andrew,

What Steve and Mervin said plus I don't think hammer it off is a good term. I'd rather call it pry it off with an appropriately placed hardwood stick. Those magnets are holding on for dear life. The good news is if you modify the spider at this time, you won't likely have to pull it again.

Good success,
