Tuning aero carb

Postby N1906R » Sat Jul 06, 2013 9:59 am

I'm hoping some of you can help as Sonex has been closed for the holiday. I have a Sonex with 3300 jab and an aero carb and am trying to tune as per aero carb manual, with carb as it came, the engine started within two blades and ran perfectly smooth, but if running the engine at higher rpm for any length of time the EGT's climb to fast and don't show any signs of stopping. I have a enigma and monitor all six. Number six gets the hottest. I've not let it get over 1350 but that's At full rich. I have not switched to the number three needle as a half turn richer made it hard to start and run worse. Head temps were cooler and more even when the needle was turned richer. Could it be to rich? There was no black smoke to be seen but a small amount of soot on the exhaust. How have other dealt with initial tuning so it doesn't burn up on first flight?

First of all, read this thread...

Secondly, don't run your engine excessively on the gound - as in no more than a minute! Jabirus are easy to damage with no airflow.

Be prepared to shave a bit of the needle at the top to allow more fuel to tame the EGT's.

Good luck...
