Hmmm, that sounds risky and it is very suspicious that this person is selling the engine again the same year he bought it.
I have sent him a message asking why he's selling again.
Thanks for the info.

I wouldn't be too worried about the engine. If its sat that long, it clearly needs a complete teardown, inspection and rebuild. But for the price, it might be worth it. I'd definitely replace the crank. Just because you never know if a prop strike happened. But with all the other stuff you get, you could basically get a zero time rebuild for a bargain.

That's what I was thinking,
Replace the crank and also upgrade the cylinders to the new 95mm bore so I get the 85hp instead of 79hp,
Looking at the prices on the Revmaster site this would be a total cost of about $2000, so with the $1500 of the engine itself you'd get a 0 time rebuild for about $3500 (maybe $4000 if you include some extra for other components that need replacing like seals and bearings).
I contacted the owner BUT, the engine has been sold already :-(

So Rizzz, the Viking is off the table now?
I still have my $1,000 deposit with him.
He seems to be maintaining some customer base and has one successful Sonex install.
I might just consider it when I build my Onex after I finish my Waiex. He damn sure better honor my deposit when I call him up in 2 years.

That's funny.
At AirVenture during one of the air shows, I was admiring the Sonex install of the Viking. Nobody from Viking was around. It had a display rack with brochures on it. Two guys came up, grabbed one, scanned it. Looked straight at me and said "Eggenfellner!, run away! fast!"
His reputation with the RV community is very bad.

For the people who have not seen this yet, Revmaster is now on the yahoo groups:

Seems there are a few Sonex builders on the list already.

I'm new at this but I'd go with the AeroVee from a TBO/cost standpoint. The chatter seems to indicate that the Revmaster is susceptible to case cracking around 500 hours, regardless of how you baby the engine. The recommended TBO on the Aerovee is around 1200 hours I think. The cost to OH a Revmaster by the manufacturer is around $4200. Since you have to assemble the AeroVee (15-20 hrs), you'll be able to do the OH yourself on the AeroVee for $500-1200 in parts depending on what's needed. JMHO

Hi Jan, welcome to the forum.
That is interesting, I have not heard or seen the figures you quote here before, especially the 500h case cracking surprises me.
