Duke Engines

Postby Andy Walker » Wed Sep 14, 2011 1:38 pm

Has anybody seen/read/heard anything about Duke Engines ( http://www.dukeengines.com/technology/overview/ )? They are apparently marketing for LSA applications and were at AirVenture. This engine is a marvel of efficiency. How about either 103hp at 100lb weight...or 180hp at the SAME weight?!? That's 60hp more than a Jabiru 3300 at 78lb less weight. :o Not sure if it will pan out, but it's good to see some companies thinking outside the box on how to design an internal combustion engine!

Interesting....We'll have to watch and see how this one does. They need to spell check their stuff though.....

Now that is a design that is outside the box thinking. Looks like an idea that could take off if the right companies back it.

I wouldn't hold my breath.. looks like they are just fishing for grant money to blow on an impractical design study

A 1.0L (~100 HP) engine would be about 230mm (9") optimized diameter, allowing it to fit inside a standard sized"carry on" airline bag.
Now that is truly amazing. The Arnold AR-5 http://www.ar-5.com/kitcarm93.html achieved a world record 213.18 mph using a 65hp rotax.Imagine an extra 35hp with less weight
The world has always moved forward pursuing impractical designs.

From their FAQs

"WHY ARE THERE NO COMERCIALLY AVAILABLE AXIAL ENGINES?

Axial engines are challenging to make practicable at typical engine operating speeds. The technical innovations of Duke Engines have been aimed at overcoming these challenges."

Don't hold your breath is right. Started in 1993 and still no production versions. We will be all dead and gone before this one takes flight in a Sonex.

All this motor company needs is for someone like Jan Egg to just bring it to market. Let his R&D team (customers) work out any bugs.
