SBPF New Transition Training Syllabus

Greetings Fellow Sonex Enthusiasts,

Recently, your friends at the Sonex Builders and Pilots Foundation have been hard at work behind the scenes on a new project aimed to help fellow Sonex owners obtain reasonable insurance coverage for either the first flight of their recent aircraft completion, or the first few hours of ownership of their recently-purchased Sonex. Historically this has been a challenge for Sonex owners based on the limited availability of Sonex-specific transition training; as of this writing the factory T-Flight program is on indefinite hold, and there are no LODA holders offering transition training in their Sonexes.

In an effort to assist the Sonex community, the Sonex Foundation is completing a new transition training syllabus created for pilots who do not have access to Sonexes for their training. Rather than attempt initial test flights without the benefit of any sort of training, we believe that the best option for new Sonex owners is to obtain transition training in a similar make and model of airplane that closely mimics the performance and handling characteristics of a Sonex. While there is no exact list of alternate airplanes that must be followed, the syllabus does offer suggestions for different airplane models that may be suitable for this purpose.

As of this writing, Sonex Foundation Special Projects Director Jeff Shultz has contacted several insurance agents to present this training syllabus for consideration on Sonex owner policies and the potential for first flight coverage availability. While discussions are ongoing, initial presentations to insurance agents have been very promising and, in general, the insurance underwriters are very fascinated in a Sonex Foundation and Sonex Aircraft, LLC. approved transition training syllabus for aircraft owners.

For access to this transition training syllabus, please go to http://www.sonexfoundation.org and download your copy today. You can print this syllabus and then search for a local CFI with access to an aircraft as previously described, hopefully in your local area.

We also recommend you listen to the newest podcast of Sonex Flight, episode #46, created by Jeff Shultz and featuring Sonex Foundation creator and Board of Director Robbie Culver, and current President Mike Farley. This new syllabus is discussed extensively and hopefully it will help answer any initial questions people have.

Discussions with insurance agents, Sonex Aircraft, LLC. and other members of AKIA are continuing, so please stay turned for additional updates as they become available. In the meantime, we thank you for your continued support and hope everyone continues to fly safely!

Thank you,

Sonex Foundation
